How to get there
Driving route
The driving route from Oskemen (Ust-Kamenogorsk) to Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi covers a distance of approximately 450 kilometers. The actual driving time ranges from 7 to 9 hours; however, due to winding mountain roads, roadworks, and challenging terrain, the journey can easily take an entire day. While most of the route features good asphalt surfacing, the final stretch requires a vehicle with high ground clearance and demands extra caution. The trip follows the R-163 national highway, passing through several key settlements: Altay, Ulken-Naryn, Katon-Karagay, and Uryl. The final 13 kilometers leading to the resort itself were long considered the ultimate test for drivers—a stretch that only four-wheel-drive SUVs could conquer. This section is now paved. However, despite the paving of the final leg, a vehicle with high ground clearance (such as a crossover or SUV) is still recommended, as the mountainous terrain still features challenging sections with rocky patches and unpaved connecting tracks.
Fueling: Fill your tank to the maximum in Ust-Kamenogorsk. Major chain gas stations are available in the towns of Altay and Ulken Naryn. Refuel in Katon-Karagay or Uryl before tackling the final mountain ascent.
Rakhmanovskie Klyuchi is located in the immediate vicinity of the Russian border. Be sure to carry the original ID cards or passports for all passengers in case of a checkpoint inspection.

- Ust-Kamenogorsk – Altay (formerly Zyryanovsk): This section includes the famous Osinovsky Pass. Major reconstruction work is underway at the pass; a bypass road has been built, earthworks are in progress, and a new bridge over the Pikhtovka River is being constructed. Driving here requires caution due to sharp bends and the presence of construction machinery.
- Altay – Ulken Naryn (formerly Bolshenarymskoye): The road runs along the picturesque Bukhtarma Reservoir. The road surface is generally good, and the asphalt is regularly renewed.
- Ulken Naryn – Katon-Karagai – Uryl: The road leads deep into Katon-Karagai National Park. The asphalt surface is generally smooth, allowing for a steady speed.
